Ever heard the old adage, “Less is more”? I first opened up my eyes to this when I was a nipper, having spotted a big carp resting in the margins of a local lake. It was quite happy resting there. It was also quite happy to ignore everything I put in front of it. I sat there, watching it filtering the water through its gills, and decided to give it one last try. I scaled down my hook, but on the tiniest bit of bread I could and freelined it right in front of this fish. Next thing I saw was the bait being sucked in at lightning speed, the line shooting across the lake and my rod being bent double. ‘EXPLOSIVE’ would be a good way to describe it!
These 6mm Super Buoyant Mini Pops are about as small as you want to go with a pop-up boilie and offer you a number of options. I haven’t counted how many are in the pot, but I’d hazard a guess that it’s 300-ish! If you look on the Mistral Baits website, you’ll see that they come in three different flavours; Pineapple, Rosehip and ‘Natural’. The latter is designed for you to add your own flavouring, if desired, but I certainly wouldn’t disregard using them straight out of the pot!
How you fish these will depend on the venue and conditions on the day, but most people would use them as a ‘tip-off’ bait on a larger boilie (in a similar way many use fake sweetcorn), or as a tiny bait on their own. Fishing small baits will often give you amazing results, but it’s often a leap of faith to do so; when many anglers are increasing the size of their boilies to eliminate runs from smaller fish, it takes a brave man or woman to go completely the opposite way. But it’s often differences like that which make the difference between an average angler and a really successful one!
Mistral Baits Mini Fluorescent Pop-Ups also make a good stalking bait, when fishing for fish that you can see. In those situations, you often require a bait that will enter the water with the minimal of fuss, yet stand out from the bed of the lake.
Personally, I like to use mini pop-ups as a teaser to see if I can get fish feeding off the top. If the wind’s in the right direction and you’re fishing PVA bags, or spodding out bait, put a few in each time and forget about them. They’ll rise to the top and if any fish fancy a bit of surface action, they won’t be able to resist them!
These mini pop-ups are of the usual high quality you get from Mistral Baits. They will pop up for a long time and will be just as attractive to fish after a few hours in the water as the moment they were cast in. I’ve had various products from the Mistral Baits ranges over the years and NEVER been disappointed. At just £6.99 a pot, it’s well worth getting a tub of these and sticking them in your tackle bag.
