If there’s one thing I’ve learnt about fishing in the 21st Century it’s that there’s way too much hype about what tackle you need.
Carp fishing, above all other areas of the sport, seems to be the worst.
If you believe what you read in the press, you wont be able to catch a carp until you’ve spent a small fortune on kit.
It’s all a load of marketing hog-wash, of course, designed to catch the angler and not the fish!
And the Captor set from Dragon Carp Direct is proof of this. For £50 you get two rods, two reels and two bite alarms – essentially the entire foundation for carp fishing.
Now I know some people will be saying ‘you get what you pay for’, but in this case that cliché just doesn’t ring true.
The Captor two-piece 12ft rods have a 2.5lb test curve rating, meaning they have plenty of poke when it comes to casting, together with enough cushion to play big fish at close quarters.
The abbreviated EVA grips and ceramic lined eye guides are added extras that aid overall performance.
The reels that accompany the rods are the Eurorunner Excel Carp models and include all the features you might expect on something considerably more expensive – including a freespool lever. You even get a spare spool with each of the reels.
The set is completed with a pair of SuperSonic bite alarms that have worked perfectly since the day I bought all this kit.
I suppose the point I’m making is this: fishing tackle can be as expensive as you want it to be. This gear is no-nonsense stuff that does exactly what is says on the label. And at £50 it’s also a complete steal.
