I wanted to introduce my son into fishing, and as I normally visit commercials, needed a bit of tackle that would suit a lake-style approach for carp, tench and bream.
I’d expected to just get him a simple float rod and a cheap reel, but that was until I visited Roger Surgay’s Skegness megastore on holiday.
As part of a special pack costing £50, I managed to get pretty much everything the lad needed for float and feeder fishing in one go.
The deal is called the Avanti Nero Float and Feeder set and comes inside a protective carrying case.
What you get is two 11ft carbon rods, which are pretty much the ideal length for small pools. The Power Feeder has two push in tips and the Waggler rod has a through-action capable of cushioning the burst of speed that a battling carp can boast. Both rods are three piece so they collapse down to a very neat and handy size. We can take his kit on any family holiday without it being a nuisance.
In addition to the rods, you get two matching rear drag reels, which do play fish very well. The youngest, Paul, does play all the bigger fish off the clutch so the drag needs to be reliable otherwise he’d snap off. The reels also come with two spare spools and a pack of Nu-Clear line in 4, 6, 8 and 10lb breaking strain.
And finally, you also get a Commercial Fishery Kit thrown into the bargain worth a claimed £29.99.
There’s fake baits, bait bands, hooks to nylon, pellet waggler floats, carp leads, a banding tool, bait tools, a feeder and a disgorger.
On the days he’s come with me, he’s caught a few good bags of carp and the odd tench and really had plenty of fun. If he decides to be more serious, I might treat him to slightly better kit but at the moment this is just fine.
