There’s a move in the market for shorter, two piece rods on commercial carp waters and I’m delighted to have joined the fan club.
You’d think this Activa Nero should retail at somewhere around the sixty quid mark so it’s amazing that it only costs £20.
Normally rods of that price are chunky sticks not really designed for serious fishing, but this is a power-house pellet waggler rod that still has a subtleness when held in the hand.
It is constructed from high-grade carbon cloth and features Matsuku lined guides and a cork handle. The reel seat is secure and comfortable in the hand.
Once latched into a carp, the Nero really does come to life with a progressive curve that cushions every lunge and gives you a confidence that you won’t pull the hook.
On the cast, the rod can easily punch out big loaded, stubby wagglers 40 yards-plus and it does it with an unerring accuracy.
This rod is also a useful power tool for margin fishing. So often big carp grub under your feet, and a short rod that is easily to manouvre can be a bonus. I’d also quite happily use the Nero for a spot of controller fishing for carp – it really is quite an all-rounder.
