Residents in Sheffield get the chance to try their hand at fishing with help from the Environment at an event this weekend.

Angling coaches will be hand at the ‘On the Waterfront’ event at Victoria Quays in Sheffield on June 11, to promote the benefits of the country’s most popular sport.

‘On the Waterfront’ is free fun day with activities ranging from face painting, to live music, arts, and water sports. Organised by Groundwork Sheffield, Sheffield City and British Waterways, the     event is part of the Sheffield Rivers and Festival and aims to celebrate the city’s historic waterfront.

The taster will give people of all ages and backgrounds the opportunity to master basics of coarse fishing. Those interested in coming along to the event can up on the day and receive a coaching     session from 11.30am to 5pm.

Pete Turner, fisheries officer at the Environment Agency ‘Taster days are a great opportunity for everyone to get an introduction fishing. There are many social benefits to angling and we aim to     help more from all backgrounds to enjoy the simple pleasures of going fishing, and the same time help them appreciate and protect their environment.’

Groundwork’s Don Park co-ordinator Helen Batt said: ‘We were thrilled with the success the first On the Waterfront event last year. This year we wanted to provide more have-a-go activities for people to try. The angling sessions will be great addition to the day.’

The sessions are part of the Environment Agency’s commitment to attract an extra 200,000 people to fishing in the next 10 The Environment Agency’s Angling Participation strategy aims to people of all ages and backgrounds to take up the sport, and promote health and social benefits to be gained.
