Rob Maylin has just been Krabi haulin, visiting his old mate Stuart Gillham for a one week fishing trip. Rob’s fishing has been getting better every day, on day one Rob fished for two hours landing a 25lb Julian’s golden prize carp on his first cast when on his second cast he landed a 50lb arapaima. This wetted Robs appetite for an early start the next morning for a full days fishing.
Rob got off to a fine start, landing three different species before breakfast, plus the icing on the cake with three arapaima to 220lbs.
Day three and things just got better when Rob broke the lake record for the most arapaima landed in a day with five arapaima all over 100lbs, plus a new pb arapaima of 300lbs+. this fish was a new world record but unfortunately could not be claimed due to a technical rule being broken when Sean Gillham had to swim out to free the fish from behind a plateau, which meant a touched line and no record. Not that it bothered Rob; what a day he had because, in between this awesome haul of arapaima, Rob caught a PB Giant Siamese carp weighing in at a respectable 65lbs on maize with a Solar tackle plastic pop up and the new awesome Solar stronghold long shank size one hook. Just to top his day he also landed two other Siamese carp.
How could our Rob top this lot? A change of tactics – he stopped fishing for the arapaima, going over to fishing on the plateau tops for Mekong catfish and carp. Well, another early start along with some heavy baiting and the action started with another small Siamese carp, Then, around 10am, Stuart ambled down to Rob’s swim just as the buzzer burst into life and a huge bow wave tore down the lake like the proverbial express train. One and a half arm-aching hours later and Rob was sweating and panting over a huge Mekong catfish in the giant free spirit landing net. Much pushing, shoving and grunting was involved in getting the beast into the giant weigh bag up on the scales. She went to register a pending new world record Mekong catfish of 84kg (185lbs). Landed on a Free spirit 6lb tc Cat Tamer rod in conjunction with a Shimano big pit bait runner reel loaded with gold label Pro Tuf 30lb line, a Richworth method feeder leading to Kryston 45lb quick silver hook link, attached to a size one Solar tackle stronghold long shank hook, baited snowman style with maize and a Solar tackle everlasting 8mm plastic pop up in yellow.
Rob topped the day landing some more carp, with many other big fish coming out at this amazing venue, including a Chao Phraya catfish landed by Mike Woodley from Swindon, that has equalled the world record at 29.5kg not claimed because we are expecting a bigger one to stuff the record out of sight, but check the web site and next months news letter for up to date monsters on www.gillhamsfishingresorts.com
