From Eureka Lodge, Caherdaniel, angling guide Vincent Appleby reports on the past week’s fishing trends on the LOUGH CURRANE system: Email: salmonandseatrout@eircom.net Website: http://www.salmonandseatrout.com/ 29/5/06: I Start with a back date and some back date I might add it was the day Munster won the Rugby European Cup and Dr Jim Comerford sealed the win by catching a 7.5 Salmon on the troll and all I can say is that I failed Miserably in my reporting and detective work, so I stand corrected.
Back to the present, Not much action in the Salmon department but you try and tell that to Mr Ken Towner of the UK and Waterville who caught a fine Grilse on the Fly in the Mouth of the Commeragh with his Gillie Mr Vincent O’Sullivan of www.vincentsfishing.com in the Sea Trout department fish of the day goes Mr Brian Chaterton who caught a fine specimen Sea Trout of 7.5 lbs on the fly and staying with the Sea Trout, Mr Bill Bullick and Mr Malcolm Davidson caught 2 fine Sea Trout with their Gillie Mr Frank Donnelly of www.lakelandshouse.com and last but not least Mr A Dunbar caught a fine Sea Trout of 5.5 lbs with his Gillie Mr Michael O’Sullivan of Waterville Boats and of lobsterb@iol.ie Wind north fresh to strong in the morning then moderated in the afternoon light to fresh, cloud cover was reasonable.
30/5/06 very light northeast wind, bright and sunny all day, in the Salmon department no comment and in the Sea Trout department very little action but I do believe one angler did catch one in the 2 to 3 lbs Class and that was on the troll. Water temperature in Capall 16.C/ 61F.
31/5/06 All quiet on the southwest front, but I see on www.loughcurrane.com there have been some Sea Trout up to 4.5 lbs being caught in the evening. Wind northwest light to fresh with bright sunshine all day.
1/6/06 They say you can’t catch my Noble Gentlemen be it Salmon or Sea Trout, when there is hardly a cloud in the sky and with sun blazing down, well Lough Currane put that theory to rest, when my Noble Gentlemen the Salmon of 10 lbs was caught on a size 12 Trout fly, by Mr Dave Herring of the UK fishing out of Waterville Boats and of lobsterb@iol.ie and in the Sea Trout department Mr Michael Flackerty of Waterville caught a fine 4 ¼ lbs Sea Trout on the drift at the Black Point. Wind west southwest fresh all day. Water temperature in the Mouth of the Commeragh 17C/62F Air temperature 24C/75F.
2/6/06 No big rod benders to talk of, be it Salmon or Sea Trout, but to be fair My Noble Angler is as allusive as the fish because of the weather, but as yesterday proved you can catch the old gentlemen if you are out there pontificating. Wind west, fresh all day with blazing sunshine all day. Air Temperature with wind chill 20.3C/68F Water temperature on the Bank of the Church 15.8C/60F.
3/6/06 Another blazing hot day, but again Lough Currane came up triumphs with a fine Sea Trout of 5.5lbs caught on the fly at the Sisters by Mr Jeremy O’Connor with his Gillie Mr Tom O’Shea of oshealoughcurrane@eircom.net also in the striking zone was a guest fishing with Mr Mike O’Dwyer, who caught a fine grilse on the Trout fly. Wind west light in the morning and light to fresh in the afternoon.
4/6/06 A mighty hot day again with the sun blazing down and a light to fresh west to southwest wind, and it took that expert Mr David O’Hagan to show the rest of we Anglers how to do it and he did it in style by catching a fine Grilse and a 3 lbs Sea Trout, all caught on the troll and for all you fly only fishers here is a perfect example of putting your pride under the floor boards because that is exactly what David did and he came back from his days fishing with a grin on his face, why do I say this, well David is a first Class fly fisher in his own Wright, Need I say more. That is all the news from your gillie and the Waterville Fishery. No Spin No Fly’s just Facts.

Ladies Day Competition – Postponed
As everybody knows the month of May has been the wettest one in living memory and one consequence of that is the postponement of the Ladies Day Competition which was due to take place next Sunday, May 11th. The water level down river is at such a height at the moment that the caterers would have had difficulty reaching the river bank for the lunch time meal and the boats would also have had problems getting a safe place to pull in. The committee is meeting on Tuesday night and a new date will be arranged as soon as possible.
The Monday to Saturday competition continues apace and the recent spell of fine weather has meant that the Mayfly has continued to hatch and there has also been plenty of spinner action in the evenings. The standings in this competition are the same as last week with Mark Craven in third place with 6 lbs. 9 ozs, Connor Hannon second with 6 lbs. 11 ozs and Sean Kelly first place with 6 lbs. 12 ozs. There was plenty of fish caught during the week but the nearest to these was a 5 lbs. trout caught by Richie Fallon. This competition does not end until Saturday 10th June so there is still plenty of time to catch that big one
Mick Flanagan, Angling Correspondent for the Westmeath Topic and Sunday World Newspaper Tel: 087 2797270: mick@midlandangling.com reports on Midland Lakes & Rivers
The Angling World here got off to a great start on Tuesday night in the National Gallery of Ireland. Mr. John Brown TD launched the much awaited book by Dr Martin O’Grady “Channels & Challenges” (The Enhancement of Salmonid Rivers). Some of the most distinguished faces from the angling scene and further a field were present for the launch. This included Eamon de Butler, Dr Willie Roche of the Irish Specimen Fish Committee, Peter Wilson Chairman R.A.I., Dr Ken Whittaker and his wife Mary, David Mackey Chairman Central Fisheries Board, his colleague John O’Connor C.E.O. of the C.F.B. Also on hand was a very young 88 years old Jean O’Grady. I had a very brief chat with Jean and it was a very proud evening to see her son Dr Martin O’Grady being praised by such distinguished people. Dr O’Grady is no stranger to the Midlands and only a few months back we featured Dr O’Grady working on Lough Ennell. Dr O’Grady is a Senior Research Officer with the C.F.B. and has worked for more than 30 years as a freshwater Biologist. Mr John Browne TD Minister of State at the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources officially launched the publication, and praised Dr O’Grady and his colleagues for their detailed work on such a natural resource. The book itself covers baseline surveys, water quality, damage to rivers from a fishery perspective, habitat problems, reconstructing pools in Rivers. These are just a few pointers from Dr Martin O’Grady’s book and it is a must for anglers who are interested in what’s happening on their local rivers. Also angling clubs would really benefit from reading Dr O’Grady’s work. The book was published by the C.F.B., for more info please contact 01-8842600 or http://www.cfb.ie
LOUGH ENNELL….
Lough Ennell trout preservation association hosted the Beaumont Cup last Sunday June 4th. Unfortunately fishing conditions were difficult with very bright sunshine and little or no wind at times. Plenty of Welshman’s Butto
n were present on the lake surface but alas no wild brown were tempted. Despite some difficulties with power craft on the lake some visiting anglers from Scotland landed cracking trout on Ennell earlier in the week. No fish were caught on Sunday so the Beaumont Cup will be fished again later in the season.
LOUGH OWEL….
Next Sunday the Irish Trout Fly-Fishing Association will hold their 52nd Leinster Provincial Trout Angling Championships on Lough Owel. Just under 150 anglers are fishing this championship which is hosted by Lough Owel Trout Preservation Association and with the permission of the CFB and ShRFB, fishing is from 10 am-6 pm and competitors are asked to arrive in plenty of time. Starting and finishing at Tullaghan with Dinner & presentation of prizes at 8pm in the Greville Arms Hotel. It is recommended that all competitors wear buoyancy aids of approved standards, plus visual and head protection. Plenty of local anglers are in action and we hope the “fish gods are looking down on them on the day”.
FISHERIES AWARENESS WEEK….
Last weekend saw the remaining events of the Fisheries Awareness week here in Mullingar. On Saturday last there was an open day at Tullaghan, and on Sunday Lough Ennell was the venue. In order to give this very important week more space we will feature it next week.

LOWER SHANNON AREA
LOUGH DERG
The mayfly season is starting to come to an end on Derg. However, there is still a bit of fishing on the lake in the evenings on the gnat which should provide sport up to the weekend.
TJ O’Brien, TJ’s ANGLING CENTRE KILLALOE Tel: 061 376009 Mob 087 8108225 reports for the Lower Shannon and Lough Derg
Now that the May fly season is drawing to an end we can say that it has been some of the best fishing anglers have had in this area of Lough Derg in many years. Average weights have increased and many 2 lbs. plus fish have been weighed in local competition. Winner of the competition run by local fishing club S.F.F.C. for the heaviest trout caught on the fly by club members was Alec Jones with a fish of 5 lbs. 6 ozs. Lots of fish were caught and released and reports of a large number of fish just under the 14 inch. limit show good promise for the future stocks in the lake. This improvement in fishing must be put down to the Trojan work done by local clubs in cleaning the feeder streams and also to Scariff-Mount Shannon hatchery run by some dedicated people which have released fish into the system over the last few years. Some fish to 9 lbs. were caught in and around the Scariff/Mount Shannon area in the early part of May. The end of April saw many fish being taken on the wet fly with popular patterns being Red Assed Green Peter, the Telephone fly (golden) and the weighted Mayfly Nymph. Dry flies were the usual variations of the Mayfly Wulff patterns and for the evening gnat fishing the Andersons spent, traditional spent and the CDC Foam spent. Anglers travelled from many parts of Ireland to fish Lough Derg this year and to all those we say thank you and look forward to seeing you all again next year.

GALWAY WEIR
Water levels are back to normal now after a prolonged spell of very wet weather and floods. There is one gate open on the weir, with a bit more water topping the other gates, leaving the river in perfect condition for fishing the fly. It seems that all the high water enabled the early-run grilse and spring fish to move upriver, and we are now waiting for fresh fish to begin running as the main grilse run comes in.
Anglers to catch fish over the last week included retired fishery manager Ne
d Cusack, who landed a 4 lbs grilse on the 1st to the shrimp. Dublin angler Shane McNamee took an 8.5 lbs salmon on the 2nd on shrimp, and on the 4th there were grilse of 3 lbs for Andy Smith from Dublin and 3.5 lbs for Fergus Crawford, also from Dublin. All the fish this week were taken on shrimp, but when fresh fish begin running the fly should start to fish well too.
LOUGH MASK
Lough Mask had fished very well over the broken weather of late May, with good mayfly and excellent olive hatches bringing fish to the surface. The recent heatwave has brought an end to the mayfly hatches for the moment, and few anglers were out in the Mediterranean conditions. Billy Murphy reports from Cushlough that Noel Moran of Ballinrobe took a magnificent trout of over 9 lbs, but we have few reports of other fishing. It should remain quiet this week in the hot weather, although late evening hatches of sedge may be worth fishing into dark.
LOUGH CORRIB
I met an exited Jan Tinnemans in Galway last Wednesday evening, who proudly informed me of his specimen trout capture earlier that day. Jan is a regular Dutch visitor and specimen hunter, who last year took a 23 lbs pike in the River Corrib. This year he was trolling a roach deadbait in the old river channel when he hooked and landed a beautiful brown trout of 4.5 kgs, or 10.1 lbs. Jan was fishing with wife Debby and sons Nick and Sem, who are sure to be future angling visitors to Ireland given their delighted looks. On their last day Jan also caught a 105cm pike, that was possibly a specimen, which he carefully returned to the water. Jan promises me that he will be back to catch that one next year when it is a little bigger….
Elsewhere on Corrib, in the Oughterard area mayfly hatches virtually ended with the hot weather and few anglers ventured out. There were returns for 58 trout weighing 92 lbs taken by 30 anglers in 44 rod-days, with fishing best in the evening, especially if there was any breeze about. Clifden anglers Albert Long and fishing partner had 4 trout on dap and wetfly for 1 evening, and young Sean McGloin from Glann landed his first trout of 1.5 lbs, fishing with dad Emmet. Their total catch was 5 trout for a half day fishing, including a great fish of 5 lbs. Chris and Anne Prenderville had 5 trout for 10 lbs on the dap on the 1st. Donal Connolly from Nonaim Lodge in Glann reports that Richard Greenwood and Chris Porter from Worstershire had 5 trout for 6.75 lbs while dapping in bright sunshine. Tim Cusik of Portland, Oregon had 2 trout for 4.25 lbs while trolling, and Taylor Vard of Glann and Dublin had a lovely 10 lb. salmon taken while trolling.
In the Cornamona-Greenfields area, the good hatches of mayfly tapered off as the weather warmed up, but sedge hatches were very good late in the evening. No doubt some anglers will be out on the fine evenings this week trying their luck with the dry fly. There were returns for 19 trout for 34.5 lbs taken by 12 anglers in 23 rod-days, including a fine fish of 7.75 lbs taken by James Purcell from Ower, Headford. Peter McGuinness fished dry fly over 2 days and 4 trout for 6.5lbs, all returned alive. Frank Reilly, Headford, had 2 fish for 3.5 lbs in 1 evening to dry fly, and Johnny Moroney from Ennis had a fine trout of 6.5 lbs on Thursday evening to wetfly. Noel Chewton from Meath had 1 trout of 4 lbs on the dap. Some late reports from the previous week included Peter Walsh and Keith Curtis, who had 28 trout for 49 lbs approx. over 11 days, mostly to the dap, with most fish returned alive. Des James’ party of Welsh anglers fished for 9 days and had 23 trout, all returned alive, and Welsh angler Ron Shepherd took a magnificent trout of 9.8 lbs on wetfly. The Cornamona Anglers held a Youths Competition on the 27th and 1st prize went to Keelin McDonald, with 3 trout for 5.29 lbs. The Kerrigan clan took 2nd and 3rd, with Cliona Kerrigan landing 3 trout for 5.12 lbs, and Dean Kerrigan managing 2 trout for 3.80 lbs. Prospects for the coming week are for quiet fishing, with few anglers out, but late evening fishing should be productive, particularly as sedge and buzzer hatches improve.

River Moy
The Moy had another good week with a total of 361 salmon recorded bringing the season total, so far, to 1,319 compared with 1,170 for the same period last year. This week’s catch was a mixture of spring salmon and grilse with the best fishing recorded upriver due to high water at Ballina. However, with water levels falling rapidly due to the dry spell, fishing at Ballina should improve considerably over the coming weeks. The Moy fishery produced just 5 fish this week with Ben Galler, Germany, taking a nice grilse of 5.48 lbs. from the Ridge Pool on fly. On Cathedral Beat, the same angler had another fish of 5.25 lbs. on a spinner and Emma Ziercle, England, had one of 7.97 lbs. also on a spinner. At Mount Falcon, Jim Wilson had a 10 lbs. salmon on a spinner and on the Knockmore club water; Sean Brophy had a huge 17 lbs. salmon. On Byrne’s Fishery, Alex Clements, England, had a 13 lbs. fish on a spinner and, on Armstrongs, John Walters, Keith Tottley and Gareth Jones had 11 salmon for their week of which 2 were released. Another big salmon was recorded on Rinnaney where Jodie Carroll, N. Ireland, had a fine salmon of 15 lbs. on prawn. On Cloongee, John Ruane had a 13 lbs. salmon on a spinner, and Tony Colgan, Westport, had one of 10 lbs. on worm. On the East Mayo water, Z. Dieter had a 13 lbs. salmon on fly and Roy Wilson, N. Ireland, had one of 12 lbs. also on fly.
Loughs Conn & Cullin
The warm, sunny conditions militated seriously against trout fishing this week but, nonetheless, 270 anglers managed to catch 225 trout, weighing 195 lbs., over 450 rod days. The highlight of the week was the Annual Lough Conn & Cullin Anglers Association 2-day comp
etition which was fished over the weekend in scorching weather conditions. Over the two days, 104 anglers (208 rod days) accounted for 52 trout (13 inch limit) weighing 66.61 lbs. The event was won by local angler, Gary Binley with 3 trout weighing 5.58 lbs. Second was John Purtil, Co. Tipperary, with 3 trout weighing 3.64 lbs. and 3rd was Denis Goulding, Dublin with 3 trout for 3.53 lbs. Thomas Lynch, Cavan, had the heaviest trout, at 3.5 lbs. Also fished in sunny conditions was the first leg of the Annual Western V North Western Regional Fisheries Board competition which produced just 14 trout for 47 anglers with victory in this first leg going to the North Western Board. Elsewhere, Guests of Pontoon Bridge Hotel, Barry Ivers, South Africa, accompanied by his two brothers from England, caught 8 trout for 10.25 lbs with the best at 2.25 lbs. Fishing out of Healy’s Hotel, Jim Corbett and Mike Barlow, USA, had 14 trout over 2 days on Lough Cullin. Bill O’Connell, Wicklow, and Jonathon Kelly, Cloghans, had 17 trout over 2 days with the best at 2.75 lbs. Fishing with Murphy Boat Hire, Pat Hughes, Dublin, had 5 trout for 6 lbs.
Lough Conn produced 10 salmon for the week. Congratulations to 92-year old Tom Ketterick, Ballina, who landed a salmon of 7.5 lbs. while trolling a devon minnow bait and to 8-year old Ryan Bannon, Co. Kildare, who caught a 6.75 lbs salmon while also trolling on Conn. Well done to both.
Lough Arrow
Fishing was quiet on Arrow this week but some good trout were again recorded. David Gray had one for 4.5 lbs. on a buzzer, Noel Fairbanks had one of 2.75 lbs. on a sedge and Leo Conlon had 2 for 4.5 lbs on spent gnat. Brendan Smyth had a trout of 1.5 lbs. on a mayfly.
Ballisodare River
Ballisodare was also quiet with the sunny weather and a break between the spring salmon and grilse runs resulting in few fresh fish running the system. Just 6 salmon were recorded for the week.
Garavogue River/Lough Gill/River Bonet
The salmon season is effectively over on Gill and just one salmon was reported for the week. Noel Reddy had an 8 lbs. fish while trolling. Some sea trout were taken on the outflowing Garavogue River.
Lough Doon
There was good fishing this week on this small wild brown trout fishery near Dromahair. Forty-two trout were recorded by 8 anglers with 28 of these returned. Dr. McDevett, Sligo, had 7 of which he returned 4 and local angler, Walter Doyle, also had 7 of which he returned 5. Various black fly patterns were most effective. To book a boat on Doon, contact Mrs. Martin, beside the lake, on 071-9164989.
Carrowmore Lake/Owenmore River
The Annual Garda Angling Competition on Carrowmore produced 9 salmon. Two other salmon were reported for the week and these were caught by Oisin O’Sullivan and Rory Murphy.
Newport River/Lough Beltra
Guests of Newport House, Cameron Conn and Rusty Wartham recorded sea tout and grilse respectively on the Newport River. On the Lough Beltra, the only reported fish was a 7.5 salmon taken by Ian Conn.

RIVER DROWES – Monday May 29th to Sunday June 4th 2006.
The Drowes maintained some fair water levels over the week with a fair number of anglers fishing. There were few fish caught however. The main grilse run has not yet commenced and the next week or two should see catches pick up in earnest. We pray for a little rain to keep Melvin and the river levels up.
LOUGH MELVIN – Monday May 29th to Sunday June 4th 2006.
Angling on Melvin was variable this week. The Rossinver Fishery hosted its annual salmon fly competition. Unfortunately no salmon were caught (Jim Hoye lost a suspected salmon) and the competition was decided on trout. This was all bye the bye since the lovely warm weather meant the barbecue was enjoyed by all in the evening. Fishing can still be an excuse huh?
Elsewhere, there were variable reports. Kinlough Bay fished well for trout with good hatches of mayfly present. The Kinlough and District Anglers competition out of Breffni Pier saw fair numbers of trout caught and was won by Phillip Rooney with 3 fish. A few salmon were caught also. Robby Hare recorded an 8 lbs. salmon with Alan Johnson accounting for a 4½ lbs. grilse with a similar 4½ lbs. grilse being caught off the shore by a visiting Scottish angler prior to setting out afloat.
EANYWATER FISHERY – Monday May 29th to Sunday June 4th 2006.
The Eany was running very low all week with no rainfall to raise levels. The gauge average for the week reads a very low 0.13 metres! There were no visiting anglers this week due to the very low conditions on this spate fishery and so no reported catch.
ESKE FISHERY – Monday May 29th to Sunday June 4th 2006.
Water levels on the Lough and consequently the River were low this week with little water to encourage salmon to run. Air temperatures were still unseasonably cool at the start of the week but warmed at the weekend. Only 2 visiting anglers were fishing for the week and I have no reported catch of salmon or sea trout to date.
OWENEA RIVER – Monday May 29th to Sunday June 4th 2006.
The story is similar on the Owenea this week. With no rainfall, water levels steadily fell from a reading of 0.2 metres on Monday to 0.13 metres on Sunday. The gauge average for the week reads a low 0.16 metres. Only 2 visiting anglers were fishing for the week and there is no reported catch to date.

UPPER SHANNON
ShRFB Reports for the Upper Shannon Region
The river Shannon at Lanesboro was high. There was very good fishing last week up to the weekend. A party of anglers from Halifax had very good catches, averaging 60 lbs of mixed fish at a sitting, including large bream on the hot water stretch. Since the weekend fishing has tapered off as fish seem to have moved from the stretch. If they return some lively action should be in prospect. Very few fishing around Carrick on Shannon. Some local anglers are trying during late evening and over night.
Chris Ganley, Claremorris, Co Mayo Tel Number: 086 8445951. Email Address: chrisganley@hotmail.com reports on his recent trip to the Hot Water stretch at Lanesboro
I fished the stretch last Thursday 1st June. I started at approx 4.30 am. The plant was running at this time and the water was very warm. I was catching hybrids and bream around 5 lbs up until 1 pm. I then noticed that the plant wasn’t running and water temperature had cooled. It had been a very hot day with very strong sun the bites were few after this. During the day the Bream caught were getting attacked by large pike as they were being played so I started fishing for pike with dead bait and nothing for about half an hour until I moved my bait off the bottom and immediately was taken by a pike which I landed and weighed at 13 lb 12 oz. This was followed by another fish at 16 lbs, great day and a personal best for me. I really need to get some time there shortly again – happy days!
Leigh Corbett, Ballyhaunis, Co Mayo Mobile: 0851071958 Email Address: leighcorbett2@eircom.net fished the hot water at Lanesboro.
Due to the recent heavy rains it was very hard to pick a venue to fish this week. There was nothing being caught on any lakes in the surrounding areas, so even though the Shannon was still very high I thought I’d give it a bash. I arrived there at 04:00 am and by 04:45 started catching bream up to 6 lbs. on worm and sweetcorn cocktail, this continued till around 15:00, and then started getting plagued by very large pike taking hybrids up to 3 lbs! The total weight of bream caught took 2 of us to lift the keepnet (and broke it!). The scales I have only go up to 30 lbs. so didn’t get an exact weight on the bream but managed to bag 6 double figure pike the biggest being a personal best of 20 lbs. 6 oz!! A great day’s fishing for me also giving me a personal best bream of 6 lbs. 5 oz.
