GAME ANGLING South Western Region: Web: http://www.swrfb.com E Mail: swrfb@swrfb.ie From Eureka Lodge, Caherdaniel, angling guide Vincent Appleby reports on the past week’s fishing trends on the LOUGH CURRANE system:

Website: http://www.salmonandseatrout.com/
5/6/06 another hot and blazing sunny day and very little action, except yes you have it; Mr David O’Hagan caught a fine Sea Trout in the 2 to 3 lbs. class on the troll. Wind southwest light to fresh air temperature at 3PM 25C/77F and at 6.45PM it rose to 28.3C/83F.
6/6/06 One Grilse caught on the troll by a Guest fishing with Mr frank Donnelly of www.lakelandshouse.com and this just proves my point again if you are out there fishing, hot conditions or not, my Noble Gentlemen can be caught. Weather the same as yesterday.
7/6/06 Another scotching day and to prove my point at 3.45 PM the Air temperature was 40C/105F down by the Lake. Wind west light to calm all day. 8/6/06 Better fishing day in a sense that there was a good fresh southeast wind, but other wise a day for a Beach Caster. Wind as above but a bit cooler not that one would notice the slight fall.
9/6/06 There was a strong southeast wind, which made for reasonable fishing and in the Salmon department, one 8 lbs. Salmon caught on the troll by Mr Egbert Koops of Hamburg Germany, he was with his Gillie Mr Tom O’Shea and of oshealoughcurrane@eircom.net on the Sea Trout front, I was fishing with two anglers from Germany and they caught two fine Trout in the 2.5 lbs class and they also had a few € on Germany to win 7-0 in the opening game in the World Cup, all I can say is, better luck next time, or keep your money in your pocket and gamble on a Lough Currane specimen Sea Trout. And just for the record they were fishing out of www.lakelandshouse.com also in good form was Mr Niall Harrington, he was telling me that he had caught two Sea Trout in the 2.5 lbs class yesterday and again today he released a fine Sea Trout also in the 2 lbs range, and last but not least a guest fishing with Mr Neil O’Shea caught a fine Sea Trout in the 2 lbs class on the fly. Bright sunshine all day, Air temperature at 3.55PM 24C/75F Water temperature along the South Shore 17.7C/63F
10/6/06 It was a wild day on Lough Currane with a strong southeast wind blowing but that didn’t stop my Noble gentlemen from being caught, and in the striking zone was a guest fishing with his gillie Mr Neil O’Shea of oshealoughcurrane@eircom.net caught a fine Grilse on the troll. On the Sea Trout front there were a few nice Sea Trout caught on the drift in Copall all in the 2 lbs class.  Overcast all day and raining for most of the afternoon.
11/6/06 A wild day with gale force southwest wind, no fishing was possible until late afternoon and I have no reports of any quality, so I will finish this weeks report by congratulating the 14 strong England fly fishing Team for winning the Lock Style International championship in Killarney over Ireland, Scotland and Wales and the England Captain Mr Vince Brooks, asked me to thank all the organisers and especially the people of Killarney for their hospitality and in his opinion it was the best ever international he has ever been on and after their great victory he and his good friend and team mate Mr Keith Nicholson, came down to Lough Currane to fish our great Fishery most of all to have a crack on the finest specimen Sea Trout Lake in Ireland, so once again congratulations to all concerned. That is all the news from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery.  No Spin No Fly’s just Facts.

LOUGH SHEELIN
Report Week-ending 11/06/06:
There has been a blanket of spent gnat on the lake most evenings. Fly hatches: mayfly buzzer, murrough. Anglers reported very few trout rising.  20 under sized trout were caught and released over the week and a few large wild fish were encountered as they gorged on the spent gnat. An English visitor had the best reported trout of the week at 8 lbs on spent. A trout of 5.5 lbs caught by John Brady, Ballinagh Co Cavan on spent gnat was packed to the gills with mayfly nymph. M Murphy of county Dublin had a trout of 4.75 lbs on spent. Eamon Connors Co Meath had 2 fish of 4.75 lbs and 3.5 lbs. Neddie Clinton had 3 trout for 7.75 lbs, best fish 2.75 lbs. Owen Mc Fadden, Kells Co. Meath, had a fish of  4.75 lbs on the murrough sedge.

LOUGH O’FLYNN & UPPER RIVER SUCK
Lough O’Flynn is fishing well. Anthony Baggot Castlerea fished for a few hours most evenings and had an average of 4 fish each session, releasing most of the catch. The best fish was just under 1.75 lbs, best fly Claret Dabbler. John Connolly Castlerea had similar catches on the same fly. Joe Flynn and Mickey Morris did well and had no trouble getting their bag limit each day.  There is a big stock of fish in the lake at present, anglers should do well fishing a perch fry fly as the trout change their diet to a new menu.

But before I get into the detail of that I should give the winners of the Monday to Saturday competition for the Mayfly season and the winner by only one ounce was Sean Kelly whose fish weighed in at 6 lbs. 12 ozs and his fishing partner, Connor Hannon, was second when his trout weighed in at 6 lbs. 11 ozs and third place went to Mark Craven for a trout weighing 6 lbs. 9ozs. Congratulations to the winners and to everyone who took part as it was a fantastic Mayfly season despite all the bad weather.

CAHILL CRACKS LOUGH OWEL IN THE LEINSTER PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS 2006…
Last Sunday Lough Owel Trout Preservation Association hosted the I.T.F.F.A. 52nd Leinster Provincial trout fly-fishing Championships. On the day one hundred and forty anglers competed with 34 anglers catching 44 trout. Conditions on the day were okay but little or no fly-life was evident on the surface and trout were very hard to move. As it turned out local angler Colin Cahill (Lough Bane) topped the day with 3-trout weighing 4 lbs 12.6 oz.  In 2nd place was Gerry Heaslip (Dodder A.C.) 3-fish weighing 4 lbs 12.2 oz. 3rd was Garry Coakley (Dublin Trout Anglers) 3-fish 4 lbs 3.2 oz, and 4th was Collinstown angler Mick Healy of Lough Lene with a combined weight of 3 lbs 15.4 oz. LOUGH DERG
TROUT FISHING …
Now that the May fly season is drawing to an end we can say that it has been some of the best fishing anglers have had in this area of Lough Derg in many years. Average weights have increased and many 2 lbs. plus fish have been weighed in local competition. Winner of the competition run by local fishing club S.F.F.C. for the heaviest trout caught on the fly by club members was Alec Jones with a fish of 5 lbs. 6 ozs. Lots of fish were caught and released and reports of a large number of fish just under the 14 inch. Limit show good promise for the future stocks in the lake. This improvement in fishing must be put down to the Trojan work done by local clubs in cleaning the feeder streams and also to Scariff-Mount Shannon hatchery run by some dedicated people which have released fish into the system over the last few years. Some fish to 9lbs. were caught in and around the Scariff/Mount Shannon area in the early part of May. The end of April saw many fish being taken on the wet fly with popular patterns being Red Assed Green Peter, the Telephone fly (golden) and the weighted Mayfly Nymph. Dry flies were the usual variations of the Mayfly Wulff patterns and for the evening gnat fishing the Andersons spent, traditional spent and the cdc Foam spent. Anglers travelled from many parts of Ireland to fish Lough Derg this year and to all those we say thank you and look forward to seeing you all again next year.

Kevin Crowley reports:

GALWAY WEIR
While water levels were perfect, the story from around the country has been of a late grilse run, and Galway was no exception. There were few fish around for the time of year, and anglers are still waiting for the main run to begin. There were a good few small grilse caught however, and among the anglers to land fish were Tipperary’s John Ryan, Tyrone man Billy Campbell, Galway anglers Des Bluett, Tony Kavanagh, Dave Lenihan and Ned Cusack. Ian Keating from Galway caught and released a nice fish, and German anglers Manfred Wilke landed 3 grilse over 3 days.  Kevin McCrossan from Donegal had a grilse on fly, and local angler Fintan Murphy landed the best fish of the week, a lovely 8 lbs salmon. Most of the fish this week were caught on fly, and water conditions are ideal for the fly now. As more fish arrive, fishing prospects should really pick up.

LOUGH MASK
The heatwave of the last 10 days was not conducive to trout angling, and a lot fewer anglers were out fishing this week. There were fair hatches of sedge and buzzer, mostly late in the evening, and fishing was described as poor to average, with 37 anglers landing 41 trout in 62 rod-days. Wetfly and dry fly both accounted for fish, with sedge, olive and buzzer patterns most successful. The annual Ulster Bank Wetfly Competition was held on the 10th, and 21 anglers weighed in 20 trout for 26 lbs approx. John O’Connor from Navan took 1st place with 3 trout for 4.7 lbs, John McQuaid from Dublin was 2nd with 3 trout for 3.9 lbs, and Hugh McArdle from Galway was 3rd, with 3 trout for 3.4 lbs.

LOUGH CARRA
There were big hatches of buzzer on some evenings, with some hatches of sedges also, but fishing was poor on Carra in the hot weather. Very few anglers were out, and 5 anglers caught 2 trout in 8 rod-days, with very few other trout seen. Tony McDonnell from Ballinrobe had a nice trout of 1.75 lbs on wetfly. A change in the weather is really needed to get the fish moving again, and angling is probably best late in the evening.

LOUGH CORRIB
No reports from Corrib this week, as angling came to a virtual standstill in the hot sultry weather. A few anglers are still trolling for big trout and pike, but flyfishing is probably best late in the evening.
The fisheries board is involved in a project to monitor the stock of ferox trout, the large predatory trout that is prized by anglers. These fish are long-lived and appear to be under threat, with concern over the stock. A number of ferox trout have been fitted with radio tags for the project to track their movements and spawning patterns over the next couple of years. Tagged trout can be identified by a white tag near the dorsal fin, and a long antenna protruding from the abdomen. If you catch one of these trout, please release it again so that it can play a part in the sustainable management of this species, and please inform the fisheries board of where and when it was caught.

River Moy

The Moy system produced a reported catch of 204 salmon for the week with fish taken throughout the entire system. On the Weir Pool, in Ballina, John Howley had 2 on worm. Eight were reported from the Ballina Salmon Anglers water, 3 from Mount Falcon, 6 from Knockmore Club water, 7 from Attymass, 5 from Armstrongs and 11 from Gannons. The bulk of the catch, however,  was taken from Foxford upstream with the Foxford Fishery, Rinanney, Cloongee and East Mayo Anglers water all doing well. On the Foxford Fishery, John Anthony, Wales, had a 6 lbs. salmon on fly and Paul Williams, also from Wales, had 4 salmon for his week with 3 on spinner and 1 on fly. On Rinanney, Owen Reg and Celia Bishop, England, had 6 salmon with 3 of them weighing more than 10 lbs. On Cloongee, Noel McIntyre, Mullingar, had a 10 lbs salmon on a spinner and David Crawford, N. Ireland, had 2, one at 8.5 lbs. and one at 12 lbs. both on spinner. On East Mayo, Claude Grossean, Belgium, had 2 salmon, one at 4 lbs. on worm and one at 8 lbs. on fly. Marcel Jecquem, Belgium, also had 2, one at 5 lbs. and one at 7.55 lbs with both taken on fly.

Loughs Conn

Bright, sunny conditions, combined with strong winds at the end of the week, affected trout fishing this week. However, 170 anglers reported 200 trout, for 240 rod days, with an average weight of 0.91 lbs.  A party of 8 French anglers caught 9 trout, weighing 15.5 lbs, and 3 grilse, for two days fishing. Larry Kelly, Dublin, and John Jack, Scotland, had over 20 trout over 6 days with the best at 3 lbs. Father and son, Bill and Brendan Moore, England, had 9 trout over 2 days and returned all.  Heinrick Lagerfeld, Germany, had 4 trout, from 1 lb. to 1.75 lbs. and Henry Mascot, France, had 2 trout for 4 lbs. Seamus Kelly and Tim Hannon had 4 trout for 8 lbs. and Tim also had a grilse which took a spent gnat!   Lough Conn produced at least 12 salmon for the week of which a number were taken on trout flies with the Green Peter proving effective for both salmon and trout.

Ballisodare River

Ballisodare produced 43 salmon for the week even though the main grilse run has not yet commenced. Fifteen of these were returned and 12 of the catch were taken on fly with most of the others on worm. However, by far the best fish of the week, a fine salmon of 14.5 lbs. was taken on shrimp by visiting angler, Jarlath McGuinness.

Lough Doon

Despite the bright sunshine all week, there was reasonably good fishing on Doon again this week. Local angler, Mark Rooney, had 4 trout for his day of which he returned two. David Watson, Scotland, had one which took a mayfly and Robinson Reed, UK, had a good trout on a Peter Ross.  To book a boat on Doon, contact Mrs. Martin, beside the lake, on 071-9164989.

Carrowmore Lake

Carrowmore produced 5 salmon this week with two of these being taken by local angler and Fishery Officer, John Cosgrove.

Lynsey Clarke reports:

RIVER DROWES – Monday 5th to Sunday 11th June 2006.
Water levels on the Drowes are dropping to very low levels and some rain would be very welcome. The fishery has been fairly quiet. The only anglers fishing have been the visitors staying in the Fisheries accommodations, who have accounted for half a dozen grilse in the 2 to 3 lbs. range. Still, the arrival of these small grilse usually precedes the onset of the main grilse run. We will be undertaking a few rain dances to encourage the start of the main run!

LOUGH MELVIN – Monday 5th to Sunday 11th June 2006.
Angling for trout has been somewhat variable on Melvin this week. Some good catches have been reported such as Jim Connolly and Johnny Ray’s catch of 17 trout with ‘12 keepers’ on Wednesday from the Rossinver area on Mayfly patterns. Other areas proved hard work for trout and the strong winds on a number of days made fishing somewhat trying.
There are good numbers of grilse appearing in the Lough and most anglers who ventured out recorded 1 or 2 grilse per day in the 2 to 4 lbs. range. A few of these were caught on the fly from the Garrison / Rossinver area with most caught on the troll.

EANYWATER FISHERY – Monday 5th to Sunday 11th June 2006.

The Eany has been running at the lowest levels we see, all week. The gauge average reads 0.05 metres which is virtually the base level! As such, no anglers were fishing and we have no recorded catch for the week.

ESKE FISHERY – Monday 5th to Sunday 11th June 2006.

With still no rainfall at all, water levels on Lough Eske and consequently the River Eske were very low this week. No visiting anglers fished the river with only 3 visiting anglers fishing the Lough, 2 sharing a boat on Saturday and 1 angler on Sunday. There are salmon in the lough to be caught however. David Martin, who was one of the anglers fishing on Saturday, recorded a 12 lbs salmon caught on a spinner close to Roshin Island.

OWENEA RIVER – Monday 5th to Sunday 11th June 2006.

The Owenea ran very low all week with no rainfall to raise levels. Looks like it’s going to be a dry June once again! A pity since there was a good run of early salmon into the fishery which can no longer ascend the river. The gauge average for the week reads a very low 0.12 metres. Only 4 visiting anglers fished for the week and I have no reported catch of salmon.

River Mourne
Reports this week indicate plenty of Grilse moving up through the system despite the low water conditions. Stephen Moats from Downpatrick fishing small flies during a brief visit to Lifford Bridge early this week caught and released a fresh run Grilse and hooked and lost a second.  Martin McDaid of Northwest Country Sports Strabane reports that he had reports of Salmon caught from a number of sections of the river among them was Mark Stewart (Strabane) had two fish from the Doctors Pool using the bubble and fly, Ian Gamble (L’Derry) banked a fresh Grilse and lost a second also at the Doctors. Martin also stated Sea Trout are starting to arrive in greater numbers and mainly along the Town section of the river in Strabane. Tom Woods of the Professional Angling Guides and Instructor Network reports from the upper Mourne that Neil Armstrong from Portadown caught and realised five Grilse using fly, Tom also reports that Steven Munn from Belfast caught and released five Grilse during an evenings fishing for wield Brown Trout. Tom stated the Grilse all took weighted Nymphs and provided excellent sport on the lightweight trout gear; Tom also went on to mention he hooked two Grilse on similar trout gear on the same stretch of the upper Mourne.  Tom recommends the use of small flies fished late evening and early mornings during the present low water conditions.

River Faughan
Gerry Campbell (PAGIN) reports that water levels are low at present but despite the less than perfect conditions a number of anglers are landing fish Paul Ogilvy (L’Derry) landed a nice fresh Salmon from Lynches Dam stretch of the river. Gerry also recommends using small flies late evening and early morning and using these methods will also increase yore chances of hooking the first run Sea Trout of the season.
Omagh Anglers
Omagh Anglers held their annual McBride and Camowen Cup tournament on Sunday 4th June; Registrations took place in the Loughs Agency’s Omagh office at 2.00pm with the weigh-in taking place at 8.00pm.The competition included all the Omagh Anglers water and was for Brown Trout only. Conditions were not conducive to good fishing with a combination of low water and bright sunshine, however those who persevered were rewarded with some fine wild Brownies.  The Winners were Sean Lyttle who had the heaviest trout; second heaviest trout went to Sean MacNia. Anthony Lyttle won heaviest bag of trout. Junior winners were Laura Smithson, David Kinloch and Ryan O’Donnell.

Strabane Lifford Anglers have been running a number of junior Fly Tying classes recently headed by Danny McGurk and Paddy Kennedy and to bring the classes to a memorable conclusion they held a fishing competition at a local stocked trout fishery on Saturday 10th June. The event was well attended with twelve juniors taking part and with as many adults on site to offer advice and equipment a good day was had by all and we now have batch of young Anglers setting out to try their newly learned skills of Fly-fishing. Well-done lets hope we can hear more of this kind of success story in the future.
The Loughs Agency aided by The National Angling Guides Association will be delivering a number of events as part of National Fishing Week and on the weekend of 19th and 20th August will be delivering a two day introduction to angling for juniors in Omagh, for further information and registrations contact lionel.knobbs@loughs-agency.org.               Tel:  (NI) 028 7134 2100 (ROI) 048 7134 2100

There are two English anglers fishing the hot water and are doing well by all accounts, other than that there’s very few fishing. River levels are nearly back to normal and prospects look very promising with plenty of fish in the hot water stretch as we write.

The hot weather and bright sunshine seemed to have had an effect on most venues. Over recent days the weather had cooled somewhat. However the forecast is for some more bright and warm conditions to return so we will have to wait and see what the outcome is. Best to confine fishing to late evening, overnight or dawn in the very short nights we have a present during the bright weather. The fish have to still feed at some stage and you just might hit it big time. GOOD LUCK!
Brian Metcalf from Adelaide in Australia spent a week with Kevin and Jane at Melview Lodge in Longford. The first part of the week saw the best catches of Bream and Tench very early in the morning. During the second half of his holiday catches improved with Bream, Hybrids and Roach showing as the weather changed. Brian changed his travel arrangements and decided to extend his holiday in a bid to get a few more good catches.

River levels have recovered. The Cut between the main river and Bullock Island fished well last Wednesday. Two visiting anglers from England had excellent fishing bagging 900 mixed fish between them, rudd, bream, and hybrids. Since then it has been a bit or miss. Ray Duthie fished on Monday night last but struggled. Apparently the fish were topping everywhere but wouldn’t feed.  The Grand Canal is fishing below Rahan, a few good Tench and also good Tench action reported on the Boora lakes.
ShRFB reports for John Dyson, Ballyshrule Lodge, PORTUMNA Tel: 090 97 41528
Anglers fishing the river are doing reasonably well on the river venues. The river has settled down and is nearing normal levels again. The northern shores of Lough Derg are throwing up decent catches of 60 lbs to 80 lbs of hybrids, roach and the odd bream.

Mary Reeves fished the canal at Belmont on 7th June and also used red maggot and caster to catch Tench, eel, Rudd and Roach. Malcolm Bailey and Gerry Wheeler from Maidenhead finished a week fishing the River Suck, Shannon and Grand Canal in hot weather and used red maggot and worm on the feeder with hook size 16. Best bags were 50 lbs. of roach on the River Suck, 30 lbs. of Tench on the River Shannon and 40 lbs. of roach from the canal. The best Tench was 6 lbs 1oz; roach to 1.5 lbs. Fishing was very good when river level dropped. They witnessed a Fairy Wind at work while fishing on the canal on 5th June at 2.00 pm. The weather was dead calm and hot when a whirlwind lifted Malcolm’s Landing Net and Keep net and threw them into the canal. A minute later all was calm again. Now they believe in the power of the Fairies. Terry Norris from Bathampton fished alongside The Reeves on the canal on 7th June and used maggot to catch Tench and one bream of 5 lbs along with plenty of small fish. Aine Connaughton, aged 6, from Ballydangan fished for the first time ever on 10th June. On a hot and breezy day Aine used worm and float to catch 3 perch which she returned alive. The wind caused her to lose her coat in the River Shannon at Shannonbridge. Andy Clarke from Gainsborough arrived in Shannonbridge on Saturday night. On Sunday he went to pre-bait his favourite swim. While there he used a spinner to catch a 12 lb pike. Then he used maggot to catch half a dozen rudd to a pound. Watch this space. Newly arrived regular visitors Graham Ruck from West Sussex and Murray Swift from Kent on Sunday visited Devenish and Correen Ford but were bothered with the windy breeze. They found a sheltered place on the canal and enjoyed a nice days fishing, catching 6 Tench, rudd, roach and bream. Guess where they are fishing on Monday? The same swims of course.
