Huge news at Emperor Lakes this week as our long standing common carp record of 37lbs 13ozs has been smashed by a rarely seen fish of 39lbs 13ozs! This particular carp has been fleetingly glimpsed over the years, but definitely isn’t one of our two recognised ‘big commons’ so we were delighted to see popular carper Steve Renyard slide it over the net cord after he offered his own brand of Contrast boilies. We also believe it to be very close to a new Devon common carp record, and it’s certainly a new personal best UK common for Steve! Using 18lbs Ultima ‘Power’ hook link on attached to 14lbs Ultima ‘Pure Power’ fluorocarbon, Steve offered 10mm and 12mm baits to a silty spot amongst gravel to land the big one which was described as having room for much more growth and it is estimated to reach the low 40’s by the time the Syndicate Lake goes full day ticket access in April 2013! This new record fish was an astonishing 42” long! Having taken the big common, Steve has stopped the press to report the capture of even bigger fish! This time it’s a mirror weighing in at a hefty 42lbs 10ozs using the same tactics and Steve’s own Contrast baits to complete an amazing 80lbs brace!!! It’s a huge result for Steve and us!
Also catching well at Emperor Lakes is Craig Sheffield who bagged a brace of carp for more than 60lbs! His first fish came out at 29lbs 1oz and fell to maggots fished over a scattering of Pallatrax Jungle baits, and he followed that with an even bigger fish at 32lbs 2ozs! After Pete Skrivanos featured recently with a pair of fish weighing 34lbs+ and 35lbs+ respectively, we promised a shot of his bigger fish; it’s another stunning lump for Pete and a new personal best! As a result of much of the work in progress, the bottom Day Lake has seen a limited number of anglers on the bank, but there have still been plenty of fish out. The best reported this week fell to Daniel Lidstone at 22lbs 14ozs after he tempted it with Pallatrax Multi-worm baits.
Investigations into the viability of opening one of our lakes for pike fishing have seen a number of big pike on the bank, so the decision has been made to offer limited access from December 2012; anglers will have to book places by calling David on 07814060147.
After all this excitement, it has been back to the ‘real’ work of fishery maintenance for owner David Lidstone and his team; David has spent much of the week improving the surrounding areas of the fishery including the ancient art of coppicing to allow light to penetrate marginal areas to encourage plant growth which will provide additional habitat for a delicate eco system. It’s not all about the fish at a fishery, and the Emperor Lakes Facebook pages and website contain some excellent pictures of much of this ‘behind the scenes’ work which are well worth viewing.
Our social media continues to gather pace and friends alike; our competitions to win free 24 and 48 hour sessions are proving very popular, so please take the time to find us on Facebook and Twitter and follow what we do to see if you could be a lucky winner!
