Difficult to know where to start this week as so much has been happening….so how about a truly amazing catfish haul?
Three anglers, twenty four hours, several float fished worms and nine personal bests later…..an astonishing 521lbs 14ozs ofcats were banked!!! Top rod TRISTAN SMITH banked fourteen fish taking FOUR new pb’s starting with a cat of 36lbs4ozs…. next was a fish of 40lb followed by a 45lb fish but his final pb is now a cracking fish of 50lbs8ozs, the other ten fish went to 32lbs 8ozs giving him a total of 367lbs 8ozs.
STEVE GODFREY banked two new pb’s, his first being a fish of 23lb and his next and new best was a superb cat of 58lb and then he backed this up with a fish of 15lb giving him a total of 96lbs 12ozs.
Next up and fishing our venue for the 1st time was CARL OSBOURNE; he managed three pb’s, first one a cat of 13lbs2ozs, the next was a lovely moggie of 18lb and his new personal best is a fish of 26lbs8ozs giving him a total of 57lbs 12ozs.
All fish were caught on float fished worm set between eighteen inches to two and half feet deep using 25lb coated braid and size 6 ESP raptors. They were fishing the open water swims on pegs 3, 4, and 5 on the Specimen Lake and have had the session of a lifetime! Another angler catching catfish was Matt Briggs who added a specimen of 25lbs after it took a white pop up offered on a zig rig…much to his surprise!
The Royal Navy/Royal Marines Carp Cup was held this week and highlight of the match was a stunning 38lbs 4ozs fish to Simon Gay on CC Moore Metoer baits and another lump of 33lbs+ which was also landed during the competition which was a resounding success.
Eels are starting to show too; Jamie Parr had a super snake at 4lbs 2ozs caught on lobworm and others have been reported. Jamie also used Pallatrax Multiworm baits to tempt a common of 20lbs 11ozs during his session. Mark Owen used the same baits to snaffle a double figure fish and Pallatrax Jungle boilies to take an 18lbs+ fish, Louie Russell returned to Emperor Lakes to add a brace of fish to 17lbs on Richworth S-Core pop ups, and Sean had a lovely 18lbs common.
On the main carp lakes, well known angler Steve Renyard used his own brand Contrast baits to take fish to 22lbs 6ozs as did Jason Benyon with a 17lbs 6ozs common and Paul Cross who had carp to 31lbs 8ozs. Plenty of other big fish out too; Jez Harris continued his recent run of success with a mirror of 31lbs 4ozs taken on Essential Baits B5, and Richard Noosan used Krill and Kray baits to slip the net under a 33lbs 6ozs common.
New ‘runs water’ Jo-Jo’s opened on 1st June and anglers are already reporting captures of fighting fit carp which have been stocked to 26lbs. Youngster Jamie McMahon had fun with double figure fish on his first visit and other visitors have been pleased with the sport so far which has resulted in more than one hundred fish on the banks! Owner David Lidstone has seen thirty three fish fall to his rods on Jo-Jo’s so far, the majority taken on Pallatrax Jungle or Lone Angler Sausage Sizzle baits. This pool is rapidly becoming popular with anglers seeking to get a ‘bend in the rod’ and is ideal place to bring newcomers to carp angling.
