How they do it without rods and reels…

Nature can often seem cruel, and I dare say that there are plenty of shark anglers who will be sad to see any shark die, but below is a clip from the BBC’s Human Planet series.

The video footage shows an inuit man and his son catching a 4-metre Greenland Shark.

Human Planet - ArcticThe fish is caught at a depth of 8oo metres (over TWICE the height of the Empire State Building!) and has to be dragged up by hand (and dog), before being pulled through a hole in the ice.

The reason for all this? To feed their dogs, an absolutely necessary part of their way of living.

The Human Planet has been an excellent series so far. If you haven’t seen it, it’s well worth catching on iPlayer. This episode airs on BBC1 on the 27th January, 2011, at 8pm.
