It’s often said that fly-fishing is an art. Unfortunately, for many of us, it’s the sort of art that our three-year old kid brings home from nursery; messy, and with the potential to bring a grown-man close to tears.
The answer to many a novice fly-angler’s woes is to get lessons. These are a great way to learn, just so long as you can find a decent instructor….and then afford him or her.
Fortunately, there is a way to have one of the best fly-casting instructors come round to your house to teach you in a one-on-one environment. It doesn’t involve a £5 text to be entered into a lucky draw, either. No, all you need to do is get a copy of Hywel Morgan’s “The Complete Cast”.
Hywel Morgan is a fly-casting legend, having the titles of World Games Accuracy Casting Champion and European Distance Casting Champion under his belt, along with a whole host of other accolades. It’s okay asking your dad’s mate Jim’s best friend Bob to teach you to cast, but if his technique is poor, you’re only ever going to learn how to cast badly. A far better idea would be to shell out £20 and learn from one of the best.
The DVD runs for about 80 minutes and, at just £19.99, would make an excellent gift. There are books out there that will teach you to cast, but other than hiring an angler the calibre of Hywel for a few days, I can’t think of a better way to learn to cast a fly.
