Rob’s Comment

Choosing the right syndicate for you.

These days choosing the right syndicate to suit your own personal carp fishing situation is essential. With prices as much as £2000 for a single season it’s an expensive mistake to make if you suddenly realise after a few sessions that this fishery is not for you. Syndicate fishing has become more and more popular as time goes on. There are several reasons for this, and it’s not just about the fish. A syndicate offers a certain security. They are more often than not locked sites where only fellow syndicate members can gain access. This means no nuisance visitors, dog walkers or more importantly tackle thieves, although I know this still happens regardless on some venues.

The camaraderie of a syndicate is second to none, if you so desire, although you can keep yourself to yourself if you wish. However most find that it soon becomes syndicate versus carp, and the catches of all the syndicate guys are well received. Some syndicates have attained almost legendary status over the years, and most anglers of the eighties followed the antics of ‘The Loonies and The Toads’, Savay Lake’s most famous syndicate. These days none are quite so flamboyant as those, but there are still some fantastic syndicates available to those with the money.

With ‘ticket time’ fast approaching, I thought a Big Carp magazine with this theme would be most poignant. Of course there are far too many to dedicate a decent sized article to in one issue, so I have not sourced campaign type articles from venues like Savay where getting a ticket is very difficult. Nor have I chosen articles on Horton, Wraysbury and the like, as only a few issues ago I had a whole RK Leisure magazine with articles on all their venues. Yateley I will leave until next month, and I’ll explain why in a moment.

Firstly, I have chosen a wide variety of venues, and secondly, ones that you can actually get in, even if it means a short spell on a waiting list. The articles are not ‘how to catch them’ articles but are a mixture of successful campaigns, seasons, sessions and individual captures on my list of syndicates including Winghams – Terry Dempsey, Wellington – David Gaskin, The Manor – Chris Eaglestone, Grenville – Steve Briggs, Ashmead – Daniel Smith, Rockford – Adam Rawlings, Wasing – Craig Runham, Christchurch – Scott Lloyd, Waterside – Aaron Murphy, Emperor – Steve Briggs. I hope that by reading them, especially the more in-depth/longer articles, you will be able to get a feel for the sort of syndicate you are looking for.

Next month is our 25th anniversary issue, and I promise you something very special. All the articles have been especially commissioned, and some will run over several issues throughout the year. There are two distinct themes: ‘25 years of’ and ‘catches you never thought you would hear about’. I am so excited about both of these themes, and I promise you have never read anything like it in your life. It will be an extra thick magazine with almost a dozen holidays to give away in France, Portugal and the UK and LOTS, LOTS MORE BESIDES.

If you don’t have a subscription yet, you must be crazy! You only pay for the mags; they are all post free, but you get free bait, tackle, books, clothing or magazines, and you can even pay in INSTALLMENTS of as little as £5 per month… You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

See the NEW SUBBY pages 60 and 61.

Happy New Year to all our readers, and thank you for choosing Big Carp again.
