Hi all

Our club "Poole Bay Small Boat Angling Cub" is holding an open boat competition on the 27th November. It is a best specimen competition with prizes for the best specimen flat and round fish. There are also Junior prizes available. There will be optional pools for heaviest flat and round fish.

The club has put up £500 cash prizes and has secured a large prize table with support form some big names such as Lowrance, Icom, Raymarine, Indespension. Most all the local tackle shops and marine associated businesses have contributed making this the best prize list we have ever had. You can expect to See a VHF, Sounder, GPS, Box Trailer, Tackle vouchers, Rods, Reels, Flare packs, Engine services, Haul out and storage plus a whole load more up for grabs. The prizes are expected to top £2700 in value

Some of the main points are

 Signing in is at Baiter slipway Poole from 7.30am with the competition starting at 8.30am. Bacon rolls and hot drinks available from 7am

 The weigh in will also be at Baiter from 3:45pm with scales closing promptly at 5pm.

 The prize giving is to be at the Mariner Club, West Quay Road (a short Drive from Baiter) where food will be provided for the competitors. The licensed bar will be open to purchase refreshments.

Cost to enter is £15 per head which includes free use of the slipway and car park (donated by Poole Borough Council) and food at the presentation.

You can fish the comp from private or charter boats. If you need a charter place we may be able to help you find a place.

hello martin great list of prizes there!! got a couple of questions for you though!! are all fish caught going to be weighed in? does this include all the spiecies that should be afforded a wee bit of protection from anglers an commercials alike eg tope, bass, cod, rays? an what about all the spiecies that are not up to a la carte standard!eg dogfish, pouting, wrasse are they all going to be weighed in on land??????? dont you think that weigh in,s on land are giving the anti,s some ammunition. its not for me to dictate how you run your competitions but surely some sort of points system for fish that need a bit of looking after, rather than dead fish being strung up in a bag on the quayside all for the sake of prizes come on lets look to the future an get another system in place <_<

I think they have minimum sizes normally for fish that can be weighed in.

ye scotty, minimum sizes are fine for taking a couple of fish home for the table , but if some guy,s are good at catching doggies then 20, 30 dogs in a 6 hour competition is not unrealistic and multiply that by anglers on board and amount of boats in the competion it soon mounts up to a lot of dead dogfish/wrasse etc surely in this day we must have someway of doing away with all the fish kills that are left usually to rot in bins or on the beach or some dump when the "anglers" cant be bothered to fillet or freeze down the fish they said would make "great eating" as is the usuall case after a long drive home, after a days fishin its time thing were looked at in that department <_<

Disappointed that you assume we hold competitions that advocate wholesale slaughter. FYI Our club is probably one of the most conservation minded clubs on the south coast.

Our club's in house comps are based on trust, no weigh ins with points afforded for each fish caught. So ALL fish can go back, ie if a member says he caught it he did, no questions asked. Our record book is also based on this system. Also our species hunts have no size limits so once you have caught your limit of a particular species you can move on, no need to catch loads of fish just to get your 4 qualifying fish.

Unfortunately an open competition with high value prizes cannot realistically be based on trust so we can’t use the above system. There is no way of policing 60 to 70 small boats that are spread over virtually 100,s of square miles so a points system is not really practical. To alleviate the need for loads of dead fish being brought to the scales we have based this comp on a best specimen basis. Each angler is only allowed to weigh in one of each species of fish. All sharks are excluded from the comp. We also advocate that anglers try to keep fish alive and return after the weigh in if possible. We will not allow fish to be left at the weigh station they must all be removed by their captor.

For future reference before you put angry faces on your posts I would suggest that you find out how competition organisers arrange their affairs before you assume the worst and start pointing the finger.

Sounds like a good comp Maverick.

Run along the same lines as our Alderney Festival (but from boats) i.e specimen weights and therefore no mass killing.

Unfortunately as soon as there are prizes it's gonna end in tears if its done on trust :(

Luckily a lot of anglers will keep fish alive for return.

Look forward to reading a full report :D
